Data Collection

Data collection is a substantial task for any GIS program.  My experience in locating sources of existing data along with my vast data library bring efficiencies to time-sensitive projects.  In addition, I can help with the production of new custom data.

Existing Data

Roads, political boundaries, water bodies, land cover, soils, elevation, and others features have been converted to digital data by governments because these data are required for disaster planning, national defense, infrastructure development and maintenance, and other governmental functions.  Existing spatial data can also be purchased from private sources.

Data Creation

  • Digitizing, geocoding, and GPS are the three most common means of creating new data.
  • Digitizing is the process by which coordinates from a map, image, or other source are converted into a digital format in a GIS.  A list of street addresses, postal codes, place names, route locations, or (x, y) coordinates can be transformed into a series of points on a map by address matching.
  • GPS (Global Positioning System) offers a satellite based technology that gives precise positional information and is the most common method for field spatial data collection in GIS.

Geographic & Demographic Analysis

Geographic analysis involves the application of operations to spatial and related attribute data to obtain the answers to a particular question or find solutions to a particular problem.

Carol Cody GIS Services also provides custom demographic studies for site location, neighborhood analysis, redistricting and any other project requiring information on demographic characteristics. Estimates and projections can be provided for a wide variety of demographic characteristics for the geographic area being studied whether it’s a school district, census tract, ZIP Code, or any other definable area.

Custom Map Development

Making information visible is what GIS does.  GIS displays are designed to promote effective communication and can be customized for your organizations needs.

Carol Cody GIS Services offers large format printing, mounting, and/or lamination services for your presentations and trial exhibits.  Also available are maps and presentations in electronic form including power point and PDF documents.
